Two summers. Two trophies. Nobody had done it before, and only Spain has done it since.

France arrived at Euro 2000 as reigning world champions, and the football world assumed they would find a way to disappoint. That's what happens after you win the biggest one — you relax, you regress, you get caught by teams who no longer fear you. It's a story football tells over and over.

Roger Lemerre's squad refused to write it.

They breezed through the group stage with three wins from three. They beat Spain 2-1 in the quarter-finals — Zidane free-kick, Djorkaeff finish, Mendieta penalty consolation. In the semi-final against Portugal, they trailed until deep into extra time, when Zinedine Zidane converted a penalty in the 117th minute to send them to the final.

Then, Rotterdam. The Netherlands' Stadion Feijenoord. Italy waiting.

Italy scored first through Delvecchio. The clock ticked into stoppage time. France were seconds from a two-year reign ending. Then Sylvain Wiltord equalised, and in the ninetieth minute of extra time, David Trezeguet hammered home the golden goal that won France the tournament.

A country that had waited its whole footballing life to win the World Cup had followed it with the European Championship — back to back, world and European champions, with a squad still peaking, still young, still ready for more.

The shirt refines the 1998 icon. Deep royal blue with the tricolore horizontal band across the chest — one white stripe, one red — but slightly cleaner, slightly more modern. The cut is athletic, ready for the millennium. The gold star above the badge marking the '98 World Cup win is the small detail that changes everything.

Zinedine Zidane wore the number 10 through both trophies and cemented his place as the greatest French footballer of all time. Euro 2000 was his tournament as much as any of them. The shirt is his.

This is that shirt. A faithful retro tribute to the Golden Era of football, curated by The Retro XI for those who understand what it represents.
